Power steering pump repair on a durango?

I'm trying to change the pump on a 98 durango. I know there's a difference in the supply and return hoses but can they be switched on the steering box and hooked up backward? I took the old one off and didn't check, now I cant tell which one goes where. How do I tell which is which on the steering box? Thanks , Laid off and cant afford a mechanic.
